Hanauma Bay & Koko Head

CITY RIDE AGAINST THE WIND TO OAHU’S BEST SNORKELING SPOT

DIRECTIONS:

  • Head towards the ocean on Kapahulu Ave.
  • Cross the street and turn left onto Kalakaua Ave.
  • At the banyan tree, enter the walking & bike path and follow it along the ocean and behind the Waikiki Aquarium
  • At the War Memorial, exit the parking lot at Kaimana Beach Park and turn right onto Kalakaua Ave.
  • (After the water fountain, continue straight and explore the historic homes on Coconut Ave. until it intersects Diamond Head Road)
  • Turn Right on Diamond Head Road
  • (Climb to the top of Diamond Head Road where views of local surfers and the Diamond Head Lighthouse await. Enjoy driving through the “Beverly Hills of Oahu” as Diamond Head Road becomes Kahala Ave.)
  • Turn Left towards the 72 (Kalanianaole Hwy) at the stop sign
  • Turn right onto the 72 (Kalanianaole Hwy) at the gas station
  • (Stay in the bike lane on the highway and be prepared to ride with some pretty fast traffic against strong winds. Please be aware of cars making right turns from the far right lane)
  • Continue on the 72 (Kalanianaole Hwy) for 6.5 miles
  • (You’ll know you’re almost there when you hit a very steep hill with Koko Head Crater on your left)
  • Turn right at the entrance to Hanauma Bay State Park at the top of the hill
  • (Make sure to arrive before your scheduled orientation video time slot. After paying the entry fee and watching your video, you’ll be able to rent snorkel gear on the beach).
  • After you’re finished snorkeling, take the same return route along the 72 (Kalanianaole Hwy)
  • (If you would like to do some rock diving on your way back, check out China Walls by turning left on Lunalilo Home Rd. To hike Koko Head Crater, turn right on Lunalilo Home Rd. Riding back into Honolulu is always easier because the wind will be on your back.)
  • As you approach the HI Freeway and Waialae Ave, take the Kilauea Ave. exit
  • Turn left from under the freeway to stay on Kilauea Ave.
  • Turn left on 18th Ave.
  • Turn right on Diamond Head Road (you’ll pass the entrance to Diamond Head State Park)
  • Turn right on Paki Ave.
  • Turn left on Kapahulu Ave.
  • Turn right on Lemon Road to return your bikes to the shop
