Lanikai, Kailua Beach Ride
One of the most beautiful rides on Oahu is along the thirty miles of coast into Kailua Town. You will cruise by Diamond Head, ride East on the Kalanianaole Highway (72) passing Sandy Beach, the Halona Blowhole Lookout, the Makapuu Lighthouse and Lookout, the Sea Life Park, and through the town of Waimanalo. Head onto the Pali Highway (61) into the beach town of Kailua, also home to Lanikai Beach, which is consistently rated in the top 10 most beautiful beaches in the world. It is a great location for relaxing, swimming, enjoying the views, or renting a kayak to head out to the Mokulua Islands.
DIRECTIONS:
- Head towards the ocean on Kapahulu Ave.
- Turn Left on Kalakaua Ave. Ride past the Waikiki Aquarium and the War Memorial on the right, and Kapiolani Park on the left. After the water fountain, continue straight and explore the historic homes on Coconut Ave. until it intersects Diamond Head Road.
- Turn Right on Diamond Head Road. Climb to the top of Diamond Head Road where views of local surfers and the Diamond Head Lighthouse await. Enjoy driving through the “Beverly Hills of Oahu” as Diamond Head Road becomes Kahala Ave.
- Turn Left onto the 72 (Kalanianaole Hwy) at the Stop Sign. Stay on the bike path on the highway and be prepared to ride with some pretty fast traffic against strong winds. Please be aware of cars making right turns from the far right lane.
- Follow the 72 (Kalanianaole Hwy) through the town of Hawaii Kai, past Hanauma Bay and Koko Crater. Stop to see the Halona Blowhole Lookout, Sandy Beach, Makapuu Lighthouse Trail and Lookout, or the Sea Life Park.
- Continue on the 72 (Kalanianaole Hwy) through Waimanalo and pass Bellows Air Force Base until you intersect the Pali Highway (61).
- Turn right onto Kailua Road (Pali Highway) to head into Kailua Town, towards the ocean. A left turn will take you to the Maunawili Falls Trail if you’re in the mood for a nice hike.
- Enjoy Kailua and Lanikai Beach and then head back to the shop along the same path along the 72 (Kalanianaole Hwy).
- As you approach the HI Freeway and Waialae Ave, take the Kilauea Ave. Exit.
- Turn left from under the freeway to stay on Kilauea Ave.
- Turn left on 18th Ave.
- Turn right on Diamond Head Road (you’ll pass the entrance to Diamond Head State Park).
- Turn right on Paki Ave.
- Turn left on Kapahulu Ave.
- Turn right on Lemon Road to return your bikes to the shop.
PRECAUTIONS: YOU MUST STAY OFF OF THE H-1, H-2, H-3, 61 (Pali Hwy), 63 (Likelike Hwy), and 93 (Farrington Hwy). Driving back to Honolulu on the Pali Hwy (61) is very dangerous on a moped. The 72 (Kalaniana’ole Hwy) is a more moped-friendly route. Please give yourself enough time for your return trip to avoid riding on any highways in the dark.
